A quick post here to direct you to a post by David Meerman Scott with a case study about how a self-published author created a powerful platform for her book using social media tactics.

If you believe the only way to get published and known is by being connected with a traditional publishing house, think again. Lisa Genova created enormous success for her book (a novel!) using free and low cost social marketing tools. Her efforts lead to a book deal with Simon & Schuster and it hit the New York Times Bestseller list.  Read the case study and prepared to be inspired about what you can do to build massive visibility for your book or product.

Disney’s TV Unit To Cut 400 Jobs

January 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Business News

Here are some business news, courtesy of HuffingtonPost.com:

The Walt Disney Co.’s television division is cutting 400 jobs, or about 6 percent of the unit’s work force, due to the slumping economy.

The cuts include 200 layoffs, while another 200 vacant positions will not be filled in a division that employs 6,500 to 7,000 people, said a Disney executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the number of job cuts had not been made public.

The job reductions, to be implemented in the coming months, were the latest announced at the family entertainment company, which is grappling with weak consumer sentiment and a declining advertising market.

Anne Sweeney, the president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, informed staff of the layoffs in a memo sent out Thursday.

“After months of making hard decisions across our businesses to help us adjust to a weakening economy, we’re now faced with the harsh reality of having to eliminate jobs in some areas,” Sweeney wrote. “I realize this is an extremely difficult day for everyone in our group.”

Her memo did not put a number on the job cuts.

The eliminated positions were at all levels and made across the group, which includes the ABC network, ABC Studios, and cable channels including Disney Channel, SOAPnet and ABC Family.

The announcement came a day after the top executive at ESPN, another Disney property, told employees that 200 jobs will be cut within a year, mostly from open unfilled positions, and that the unit will implement a freeze on hiring and executive pay raises.

ESPN chief George Bodenheimer told employees Wednesday that the economy was worsening, “and ESPN and our business partners — especially some of our major advertisers — are feeling the impact more acutely than at any point in our lifetime.”

Thursday’s move came after Burbank, Calif.-based Disney said last week it would merge its ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios divisions. Sweeney said that reorganization was intended to “streamline the creative process.”

ABC Studios had already sought cost cuts of about 2 percent from two dozen shows including “Desperate Housewives” in November after Disney reported losses at its broadcasting group had more than quadrupled from a year earlier.

Last week, Disney’s parks division also offered voluntary buyout packages to about 600 executives and gave them until Feb. 6 to opt in.

Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said in November the company was seeking to pare costs across the company to keep pace with worsening economic conditions.

The company is set to report its earnings for the first quarter, which ended in December, on Tuesday.

Lou Bortone Shares Tips about Using Online Video

Yours truly GordonWebbo today wants you to read the following article, courtesy of this site:

Are you attending the <a href=”http://socialmediatelesummit.com/blogsquad” target=”_blank”>Social Media Telesummit (going on daily through January 30)? Last week, I listened to a few of the programs as time permitted. One of my favorite video guys, Lou Bortone, was the featured speaker right before The blog Squad.

Instead of taking notes the traditional way with pen and paper, I used twitter to report out to my followers some of the nuggets Lou shared.  Here are a sample of a few video tips from Lou Bortone. These are quotes and abbreviated notes.

Online video rocks! It’s time to jump on the video bandwagon to build your brand.

Video helps build rapport & immediate connection and makes you memorable.

[There's a] low barrier to entry for using video. Use webcam or Flip camera:

Video helps you get known online very quickly

Add a welcome video to website; create live video on ustream.tv, send video postcards, use Flip to get testimonials

Use http://www.tubemogel.com to upload your videos to multiple video sites

[Example of a] video squeeze page: http://www.stand4yourbrand.com

Use blip.tv instead of youtube.com for video distribution; blip.tv looks better.

I’ve been asking around on Facebook and Twitter to find out who the best video bloggers are. Do you have a favorite vlogger? If you know of a blog that uses video really well, please post the link in the comments below. Thanks!

The Definition of Blogging

Yours truly GordonWebbo today wants you to read the following article, courtesy of this site:

The definition of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging is something that is very much in flux, as the new technologies that appear every day redefine what a blog is, what a blog can be, and what a blog should do.

For many years, blogs were defined as text-based websites that kept records of days, similar to a captain’s log on a sailing ship.

However, this started to change as the group of people who kept blogs became more diverse. The more bloggers began
to explore the limits of the medium and of the technology that made it possible, the more the boundaries of what could be called a “blog” expanded.

Today, there are an abundance of photo blogs, and there are even video blogs as well. Mobile <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging devices may well change the definition of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging entirely by making it possible for bloggers to create new kinds of posts.

Another element of the blogosphere that is starting to redefine <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging is the corporate blog. As more companies hire writers to keep blogs with the sole purpose of creating positive buzz about their brand, bloggers across the globe are arguing about whether these manufactured blogs are really worthy of the name.

Between all of these different forces that are constantly expanding and reshaping the blogosphere, it is difficult to imagine that the definition of what is and is not a blog will ever remain fixed for very long.

How to Learn Blogging Software

Yours truly GordonWebbo today wants you to read the following article, courtesy of this site:

A lot of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging software is specifically designed to be simple to use, but even the least intimidating <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging program can feel very overwhelming to somebody who has not spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of different kinds of software.

Particularly for newer bloggers, learning how to use the interface of <a href=”http://cuteaffiliate.com/<a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging-with-wordpress/” target=”_blank”><a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging software is the most difficult part of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging.

If you are somebody who feels comfortable expressing themselves in another medium, it may prove to be well worth your time and effort to learn <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging software, but that doesn’t mean that the task will be easy.

The main thing that will help you find success as you learn how to use a new kind of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging software is to try and take things slowly.

Many people get so excited about learning to blog that they try to rush into the thick of it and start exploring the most complicated features of a program right away.

This can lead to getting confused and feeling frustrated, and all too many potential bloggers burn out during this stage of the process.

If you take your time learning the basics of your blog software program before you move on to more advanced techniques, you will be more likely to retain what you have learned, and to keep feeling positive about your ability to understand the world of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging.

Blogging 101

Yours truly GordonWebbo today wants you to read the following article, courtesy of this site:

<a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging 101 is mostly about the <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging vocabulary. To understand blogs, you need to know the terms blog, platform, domain, and web host.

Once you have mastered these key elements of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging, you can enter any conversation about <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging with confidence.

After you know what exactly a blog is, you will be on your way to passing the final exam of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging 101.

blog is short for weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. That’s all! Most blogs are text, but there are also photo blogs and video blogs.

The rest of <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging 101 has to do with the technical side of things. If you are setting up a blog, you will need a platform, a web host, and a domain.

A <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging platform is a computer software program that allows you to write posts and to update your blog. Your platform is also what you use to design the look of your blog, from color scheme to font size.

The web host is sort of like the virtual file cabinet where your blog is stored. Your computer communicates with the host when you upload or edit a post.

The domain is the online address of your blog, and usually ends in ‘dot com’. Now that you know what a blog is, what a platform is, and what domains and hosts are, congratulate yourself!

You have passed <a href=”http://www.gordonwebbo.com/go/blogging”>blogging 101.

Finding a Writer to Write Articles

Yours truly GordonWebbo today wants you to read the following article, courtesy of this site:

Finding the right freelance writer to produce your revenue generating articles can take a bit of time, however, if you find one that can easily take on another regular client and the two of you work well together, then that one difficult search will turn into a lot of profitable articles.

When you start your search, you may want to begin with a very small group of articles, just in case you happen too hook up with a writer that you are less than thrilled with.

It is important to keep in mind that there are several different types of writing and each writer might be highly skilled in one area, yet lack in another.

For example, there is creative/fiction writing, biographical writing, news writing, general informational article writing, critical writing, copy-writing, poem/verse writing, technical writing, medical writing, essay/report writing, and sports writing.

Although a writer may be highly skilled in one area, many freelance writers spread themselves out into others areas as well. So, it is critical that the writer you choose can produce the type of content that you need.

To find a freelance writer, you can look at various freelancing websites that will allow you to post the specification of your project and your budget.

From there, writers will make bids on your project and provide you with writing samples so that you can get an idea of their skill level.

Make sure that you choose a writer who gives you a sample of the type of article that you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for a copy-writer, do not hire someone who only sent you a sports writing sample.

He or she may be an outstanding sports writer, but copy-writing is about selling (a product, service, or yourself) to your website visitors.

In conclusion, the more you are willing to pay per article, the more bids you will get from quality writers who know how to entertain and inform your website visitors so that they keep coming back for more.

Writers know that you will eventually make a ton of money off of each article or content piece. So although $30 or more for a 500 word article may seem like a lot, when you think about the service they are providing you and the time and effort that they put into your piece, then you will realize that it really is not a lot for that one article.

If you pay for quality, you will be amazed at how much you will eventually make off of your articles.
